Four Reasons Why a Multivitamin is Good for You

Some doctors say a multivitamin is a poor way to get nutrition and a better way is to get it from natural foods.

Here are four counter arguments:

  1. The average U.S. adult gets 63% of their daily calories from ultra-processed foods, 30% from processed food, and just 7% from natural foods.  As a result, most adults do not get enough of their nutrition (vitamins and minerals) that come from natural foods.
  2. Some farmers practice great soil conservation techniques, e.g. crop rotation, but most do not. Therefore, much of our topsoil has a limited supply of the minerals adults need on a daily basis.
  3. Some vitamins are very hard to get from food, like Vitamin D, as very little occurs naturally in foods.  95% of U.S. adults have vitamin D insufficiency.
  4. The National Institute on Aging recently funded a 3 year study of 2,300 people over 65.  The ones taking a multivitamin had better decision making ability, short term memory and cognitive improvement that the ones not taking the multivitamin.
