Quick Tips to Prevent Dehydration

Is it a struggle staying hydrated?  Drinking enough water is crucial to the everyday health and longevity of your body. 

Drinking enough water is a key part of maintaining a healthy, well-functioning body and often one of the most overlooked aspects of a strong diet. During a busy day it can be easy to forget to have enough glasses of water, or tempting to just grab a soda or a cup of coffee instead. While it may not provide the taste, water does so many important things for your body that those other drinks can’t. Water can deliver nutrients to cells, regulate body temperature, speed up metabolism, help inflammation, remove waste products, and keep organs functioning properly.

So, how much water should you be drinking? The average person should aim to drink about 6-8 eight ounce glasses every day. It’s important to note that not all your water has to be obtained by simply drinking glasses. Water can be consumed by eating fruits and vegetables: berries, oranges, watermelons, lemons, and cucumbers are all great examples.

The key signs of dehydration to look for are: dark yellow urine, lightheadedness, dizziness, and fatigue. If you struggle to stay hydrated throughout the day, try these easy tips:

  • Carry a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day
  • Drink a glass of water with each meal
  • Drink water on a time schedule (at the end of every hour)
  • Drink water before, during, and after every workout
  • Try adding a lemon or lime to promote flavor

When you are feeling hungry, try drinking a glass of water instead. The body often confuses thirst for hunger, and true hunger will not be satisfied with water.
